What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that develops in the plasma cells found in bone marrow. Plasma cells are a type of white blood cell critical to maintaining a healthy immune system. In multiple myeloma, plasma cells become malignant and multiply, crowding out healthy cells. As the cancerous myeloma cells proliferate, they can damage bones, cripple the immune system, impair kidney function, and result in chronic anemia.

What we’ve accomplished

Since the founding of the Multiple Myeloma Charity Classic in 2009, we have raised over one million dollars for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). In that time, research supported by the MMRF has led to:

  • Development of 10 new treatments in the last decade.
  • FDA approval for four new drugs in 2015 – Darzalex, Ninlaro, Empliciti, and Farydak.
  • A 40% improvement in 5-year survival.
  • Discovery of 10 myeloma sub-types and identification of specific treatment targets.
  • Creation of a clinical network to speed new therapies to trial.
  • Tripled patients’ life expectancy.
  • A reason to hope for a cure.

The Multiple Myeloma Charity Classic is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  Our mission is to raise awareness and much needed funding for research in the fight against a currently incurable form of cancer, Multiple Myeloma.  Our organization hosts an annual golf and tennis tournament and a Capitol Hill reception, all of which raise funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF).

We chose the MMRF as the beneficiary of our fundraising efforts because it has consistently earned the highest charity rankings by directing nearly 90% of its total budget to research and related programming.  The MMRF is one of the leading cancer research organizations worldwide.  The unique MMRF Precision Medicine Model is the only end-to-end system in cancer research today and is leading the way to new, innovative treatments and cures.
